PhD Thesis on "Study of metal complexes of Schiff bases bearing bioactive heteryl substituents”

The majority of organic compounds and inorganic anions possess donor atoms and can act as ligands.
Since there are so many different metal ions there are limitless number of coordination compounds that
may be formed in natural water, in biological fluids or industrial process water and waste water.
Important properties of metal ions such as their solubilities in fat or water and their toxicities will depend
on the countless number of possible ligands attached to the metal ion.
The chemistry of metal ions in solution is essentially the chemistry of their complexes. Transition metal
ions in particular form many stable complexes. Complexes must have been a complete mystery without
any knowledge of bonding or structure.
The Schiff bases are the organic ligands containing azomethine(R-C=N-)group and hence can act as
effective ligands. The schiff bases are more effective as chelating agent when they bear supporting and
stabilizing group like –OH in the vicinity of –C=N group.
The complexing properties of schiff bases with metal ions have led to the formation of various
complexes. Schiff bases and their metal complexes play a prominent role in modern coordination
chemistry. The schiff base ligands and their metal complexes find paramount applications in the field of
food and dyes industry, agriculture, analytical chemistry, catalysis, polymer science.
In present work Schiff bases derived from sulphonamide and substituted sulphonamide with
salicylaldehyde are prepared and their chelating nature towards transition metal ions is studied. Effect of
temperature and its biological activity is also studied .
